Why Are There Different Levels of Care in Addiction Treatment?

Substance use disorder affects everyone differently. Some people may need a structured, full-time program to start with, while others may be able to maintain recovery with part-time therapy and support. Treatment levels exist so that care can be tailored to your needs — not the other way around.

Most people progress through multiple levels as they stabilize, build coping tools, and prepare for long-term recovery.

Addiction Treatment Levels of Care: Comparison Chart

Below is a clear breakdown of the most common levels of care, presented as individual cards you can expand for more details. This format helps you easily understand what each level offers — and where you or your loved one might fit best in the recovery journey.

Breakdown of Each Level of Care

1. Medical Detox

Detox is often the first step in treatment for individuals with physical dependence on substances. It’s medically supervised to safely manage withdrawal symptoms and stabilize the body before beginning deeper therapeutic work.

While BeBold Recovery doesn’t offer detox on-site, we can help connect you with a trusted detox center and coordinate a smooth transition into one of our outpatient programs.

2. Inpatient Treatment (Residential Rehab)

Inpatient treatment provides 24/7 structure in a live-in facility. It’s designed for individuals with more severe addiction or mental health needs who need space away from triggers to fully focus on healing.

If needed, BeBold will help you access inpatient care and welcome you back into outpatient support when you're ready.

3. PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program)

At BeBold, PHP is the most structured outpatient program we offer. It combines the intensity of inpatient rehab with the flexibility of living at home or in sober living.

Who it's for:

  • People coming out of detox or residential care
  • Those experiencing strong cravings or emotional instability
  • Individuals who need daily therapeutic support but not 24/7 supervision

Services include:

Daily group therapy, weekly 1:1 sessions, psychiatric services, case management, and MAT (medication-assisted treatment) as needed.

4. IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program)

IOP gives you strong clinical support while allowing you to manage work, school, or home life. It’s ideal for those stepping down from PHP or needing more structure than standard outpatient care.

5. OP (Outpatient Program)

Outpatient care is the final step for many. It offers ongoing support, connection, and accountability as you reintegrate fully into everyday life.

So... Which Level Is Right for Me?

Here are a few signs that can help you decide:

  • I have physical withdrawal symptoms when I stop using. → Start with Detox
  • I need structure but can’t live in a facility. → Try PHP
  • I’ve completed inpatient or PHP and need flexibility. → IOP may be right
  • I want to maintain progress with weekly therapy. → Consider OP

Still unsure? Our team at BeBold offers confidential clinical assessments to help you find the best fit. You're not alone in this decision.
